Genes to die for. (2024) Oil on canvas

The work of Janet Dorey is concerned with the motif of an organic life form re-asserting itself in a post-human cityscape. Working across painting, drawing, and collage, Dorey explores representations of abject, anthropomorphic matter to explore the disembowelment of capitalist greed and its soft underbelly: an exorcism of what she calls the ‘corps à rats’, seeking liberation from the exoskeleton of architectural space, wherein interiors are re-considered from oblique angles.

Dorey incorporates a complex layering process in her work, using a variety of media to develop abstract compositions, where the use of colour, light and shape celebrate the luminosity of materials, resulting in an unexpected dimensionality. She endeavours to create imagery that is both compelling and ambiguous, always with a sense of form. Using combinations of analogue and digital processes, Dorey makes use of multiple layers and different qualities of surface – matt, glossy, transparent – their focus emphasised or offset by shimmering effects of reflected colour. Dorey focuses on visual plasticity as an integral quality to be developed in the studio.
